Supercell has appointed a new CFO who will focus on working with investee companies
Supercell today announced the appointment of Gerard Griffin as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).
Griffin has over 25 years of financial and business leadership experience with major companies in gaming, media, and technology, including NBC, EA, Zynga, and most recently, Sportradar.

As the new CFO, Griffin said he will work with the Supercell leadership team to remain creative in growing the company's games and business. "I'm excited about the future as we continue to innovate and grow our best-in-class titles and expand our highly engaged player base," he said. “
Ilkka Paananen, CEO and co-founder of Supercell, said, "Gerard understands what it takes to build and grow a great company. We're experienced in building great games, and Ger's leadership will help us continue to build a better business." His passion for gaming, his vast experience, and his unique sense of Ireland humour seemed to fit well with Supercell's culture and would help us keep improving. “
Outgoing CFO Janne Snellman will remain at Supercell, focusing on the company's current and future growth initiatives, such as partnerships with investee companies.
Supercell continues to increase its weight in the investment space
Since 2016, when Supercell became a subsidiary of Tencent and began investing in other developers for the first time, Supercell has made investments in as many as 19 companies, both large and small, in the eight years. Most of them are small game developers, some are teams whose works already have a certain degree of popularity, and some are "potential stocks" that have been co-opted.
Companies in which Supercell currently invests
Among them, the highest "rate of return" is the investment in Metacore, the developer of the game "Manor Together". In 2021 alone, Metacore contributed $180 million in revenue to Supercell, which is much higher than its original $25 million investment in Metacore. Supercell's investment helped scale the mobile game Manor Hop, which now generates $344 million in revenue.
Previously, Ilkka Paananen said on the Visionaries Unplugged podcast: "It's our responsibility to invest in the next wave of entrepreneurs. “
In the past, Supercell not only didn't poach people from these small studios to their own companies, but they didn't let these studios develop projects for themselves. They chose not to interfere with most of the studios and to maintain the independence of these companies. I wonder if this shift in the work of current CFO Janne Snellman will change that.
