Recently, Nintendo released an official statement that it has successfully acquired Shiver Entertainment, a developer focusing on the porting of the Switch platform.

Nintendo said it has entered into an agreement with Shiver Entertainment's parent company, Embracer Group, to acquire 100% of Shiver Entertainment's outstanding shares. Upon completion of the acquisition, Shiver Entertainmen will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo.

According to public information, Shiver Entertainment has been established for 11 years, and the studio has been undertaking large-scale game development projects, focusing on porting well-known video games to major console platforms. Popular games such as Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 1 have been successfully ported to Switch consoles.

At the end of 2021, Shiver Entertainment was acquired by the Embracer Group. At that time, Embracer Group acquired dozens of game companies such as Hungarian animation studio DIGIC, Spotfilm Network, and Perfect World North America. However, in 2023, with the changes in the global economic environment and overseas markets, Embracer Group began to sell the previously acquired game studios on a large scale within the group, and adjusted the group's organizational structure.

Shiver Entertainment became one of the studios that Embracer Group was looking to sell. And his new owner, Nintendo, has made it clear that it is not prepared to carry out large-scale internal overhauls after the acquisition.

In Nintendo's statement, it said that the acquisition was "aimed at securing high-level resources for porting and developing software products" Shiver Entertainment became a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo, but Shiver Entertainment will remain independent for now, and its internal work will not change much, and it will continue to port and develop software for multiple platforms, including Switch.

It is worth mentioning that although Nintendo has invested heavily in the game industry, it has rarely implemented acquisitions. This is its first acquisition after the acquisition of Next Level Games in 2021. Therefore, this move is also believed to be Nintendo's introduction of external content to enhance its game software content.

In fact, in recent years, Nintendo has been ramping up its software capabilities to drive console sales, and last year, the company signed a ten-year deal with Microsoft Corp. to ensure that the Call of Duty franchise will run on the Switch platform for the foreseeable future. Today, the acquisition of Shiver Entertainment may be just as intended.
